How to save water (and energy) by changing the faucets in your home

It's true, a normal faucet is infinitely cheaper than one that has a flow or temperature limitation system (they can cost you double or triple that of a conventional faucet). But although it may seem, at first glance, an expense is actually an investment because it means a great saving of water: up to 50%.

Among the different savings systems, you can choose from several classes:

  • The ones that save water and energy: they have a flow limiter and a cold water opening system. They save on hot water.
  • Temperature limiters: they come equipped with both flow and temperature limiters. There are some that are very easy to install, such as those in the QuickFix Plus system.
  • Those that limit the flow: they usually have a cascade-type jet, which makes it easier to control the flow.

These systems are not only found in faucets but also in shower columns.

When it comes to choosing designs , you can choose between two-lever or single-lever, with the latter being cheaper, up to almost 20%. On the other hand, you have them on the wall or on the countertop.

In terms of materials, you can choose from brass faucets that are usually the cheapest. The stainless steel ones go up a little more in price and finally the ceramic ones are the most expensive.

As for the systems, you can choose with a hand detector, with proximity and activation sensors; or the cold-opening ones, which are usually the ones with the highest price.

Regarding the finishes, the most competitive in terms of price are the chrome ones. If you want it lacquered, in bronze or gold, they will be more expensive: up to 30% more.

According to the Water Research Centre, 8% of domestic water consumption comes from showering. This type of faucet will allow you to save water but not only electricity: as you mark the degrees you want, you will not have to wait for the water to reach temperature and that makes the boiler be on for less time.

In short, all advantages: water savings, energy savings and greater comfort, since you will not have to adjust the hot water as it happens with conventional taps. If there are children at home, this type of faucet provides greater safety since having limiters will prevent the hot water from exceeding 38 degrees and thus, there is no risk of burns.
