The 'low-cost' enters with force in the Spanish hotel sector

Luxury has recently become the most successful segment within the hotel sector. But now, its antonym, the 'low-cost', has begun to gain weight in this market. The importance of 'high standing' can be seen with the landing of 21 new brands, of which up to eight are called luxury. But the increase in the price per room has opened up a new potential market niche: low-cost hotels.

One of the great examples of this new segment is the French hotel chain B&B Hotels. "There is an important positioning of the group for Spain to grow and we have to do it faster than the current one", as confirmed by Lucía Méndez-Bonito, CEO of B&B Hotels Spain and Portugal in elEconomista.es. This company plans to open 15 hotels in Spain and already has 42 assets in our country.

This same media asserts that market sources believe that the new 'players' of this segment still have very little competition because it is not a product that still arouses the interest of users. In any case, it is precisely this situation that favors that this type of hotels have a wide margin of entry into Spain.

Globally, it should be noted that Marriott, Jin Jiang and Hilton are the largest hotel groups in the world, exceeding one million rooms each and increasing the distance compared to their competitors, according to the latest edition of the world hotel ranking prepared annually by the specialized publication 'Hotels Magazine'. In the first position is Marriott, which has increased its portfolio by some 142,569 rooms between 2019 and 2022 and already has 8,082 hotels and 1.49 million rooms.
